International Mathematics Competition for University Students 2024

International Mathematics Competition for University Students 2024

For the first time, Leibniz Universität Hannover took part in this year's International Mathematics Competition for University Students (IMC), which took place at the American University in Blagoevgrad, Bulgaria, from August 5 to 11, and achieved a great result as the third best among German universities.

The two five-hour exams of the competition contain five difficult problems from the fields of linear algebra, analysis and combinatorics. In addition to the exams, there was also an excursion to the nearby Rila Monastery and various activities organized by the sponsors. However, the focus was on the opportunity to exchange ideas with the more than 400 students from over 100 universities from a wide range of countries taking part in this year's IMC.

The Hanoverian team, consisting of Roman Bergmann, Lukas Schulze and Florian Elbrandt and supported by team leader Male Hesse, also achieved excellent results in the individual rankings: Florian Elbrandt made it into the top 20 participants, Lukas Schulze won a second prize and Roman Bergmann an Honorable Mention.

The team would like to thank the university and the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics for making the participation possible and for the financial support as well as the targeted preparation for the competition through regular training with Christian Bernert.
