Over 400 students from all over the world took part in the IMC (from July 27 to August 3 at the American University in Blagoevgrad, Bulgaria). LUH was there again this year with a team of both mathematics and physics students. We had the opportunity to meet lots of people during a wide variety of activities, such as a visit to the Rila Monastery.
We were well prepared for the two five-hour exams with challenging tasks from subject areas such as linear algebra, analysis, and combinatorics: Last summer semester, a weekly seminar was held in which theory, approaches, and useful tricks were discussed. Above all, we solved many interesting problems together.
And the preparation paid off: Johannes Raitz von Frentz and Florian Elbrandt, who were selected for the team in June, each won a silver medal. Lukas Schulze received an honorable mention. Finn von Harpe also performed well.
Many thanks to the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics for its financial support and to the Institute for Algebra, Number Theory, and Discrete Mathematics for its organizational support of the competition and preparation. We look forward to next year, when we hope to have even more interested students participating in the preparation and competition!
